In the background, you can see the towering Arizona Mesas, sparkling red in the distance and lit by that glorious setting sun. Part of the Colorado Plateau, Mesas lifted over 3 million years ago. Since then, erosion by wind, rain, and snowmelt has exposed the layers of sediment (mainly sandstone) to form the spectacular red rock formations we see
