A wealthy landowner and MP for Wiltshire, Thomas Thynne married Lady Elizabeth Percy, daughter of the Earl of Northumberland, in 1681 but was then assassinated the following year by Count Karl Johann von Konigsmark, a rival suitor. Konigsmark was acquitted of the crime, allegedly due to corruption
