After developing a smallpox vaccine, she became an inventor. After raising 15 children in Como, Italy, she switched the focus of her work to botany, studying the flora of the Lake Como region. In 1817, Helena discovered a new (and rare) type of campanula flower (aka bellflower). The flower was named Campanula perpentiae in
