This roughly carved little man is carrying a heavy load

The image at the center of the lid appears to be a lithograph over which stain was added

imparting the idea to the the kids (and noting in large letters that the reverse side of the page should NOT be drawn on)

though I am not 100% certain as there is no mark that I can see

From what I know, it was common dinner party fun in early 19th c. France to place rebus plates in front of guests as an amusement and what could be better than that?
