The bridge was intended to allow uninterrupted continuity of vehicular and general traffic. In 1876 a competition was held to design a new crossing over the Thames below London Bridge. This was one of the more than 50 designs submitted. In the event, Sir Horace Jones's Tower Bridge was the design chosen.
