I really love the dynamic and contrasts between these two--the elder certainly having witnessed quite a progression of technology from telegraph to telephone
The frame (with pretty little acorn at top holding a hanging ring) tells me that this inked silhouette dates to the 1830s or so

I think quite possible these were made in England for an American audience, where Jackstraws seems to have been the more common name.
