Charcot (1867 1936) commanded the French Antarctic Expeditions of 1904 1907 and 1908 1910. Le later switched his attention to the Arctic, but was killed in 1936 when his ship, the 'Pourquoi Pas?' was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Iceland.
