Constructed of gilded bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a central monogram of Grand Duke Friedrich II, within a laurel wreath, the reverse bearing an inscription of FR TREUE DIENSTE BEI DER FAHNE (FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE TO THE FLAG), above a number 12 in Roman numerals, within an oak leaf
