Bass is alleged to be the seated figure in the centre. He led a gang that held up a Union Pacific train at Big Springs, Nebraska, on 18th September 1877, stealing $60,000. He was shot in an ambush at Round Rock Texas on 19th July 1878 while scouting the area before a planned bank robbery and died from his wounds the following day. A print from the Pictorial History of
