Instituted 16 June 1889 by King Karl and Queen Olga. (1889 1916 issue). Constructed of bronze with enamels, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse bearing raised and rightward facing profiles of King Karl and Queen Olga, circumscribed by names and titles, topped by a red enameled Geneva Cross, the reverse bearing a central inscription of FR VERDIENSTE UM DAS ROTE KREUZ (FOR MERIT IN THE RED
